Best Guns for
Summer Carry

By Dan S Defense

Its summer and it's hot. You want to carry a handgun for self defense, but you don't want to wear extra layers to conceal your handgun. You have a summer special IWB (Inside the Waist Band) holster, but you don't want a heavy gun that requires a heavy belt. And since you want to wear shorts, a full size gun that weights over 2 pounds, isn't on the menu. So what can you do? Which guns can you carry on a hot and humid day? Read on and you'll discover the best guns for summer carry.

1: Ruger LCR

The Ruger LCR is compact and light. It has a capacity of five 38 Special rounds and is rated for +P ammo, should you want extra power. The LCR will resist sweat and offer you comfort and protection. The Ruger LCR can be carried in the pocket, with a proper holster and it won't pull your pants down or offer any type of pain.

The Ruger LCR has a grip that works well with wet and sweaty hands, so you know you'll be able to get a good grip when you need it. 2: S&W 325PD

The S&W 325PD offers the power of a 45 ACP cartridge in a small and light package. The short "N frame" carries six 45 ACP cartridges in a moon clip, which means that you have significant fire power and an easy way to reload.

Despite being an "N frame" the light frame and short barrel means that you can carry the 325PD in your pocket, with a proper holster and have it ready when you need it. In short you get a pocket gun with six 45 ACP cartridges! If you want to read a more in-depth review of the S&W 325PD, read this article and then see if the S&W 325PD is the best summer gun for you. 3: S&W 442 Airweight

The S&W "J frame" has a long history of concealed carry, this gun is light, reliable and chambers five rounds of 38 Special. With proper self defense cartridges, the S&W 442 can save your life and get you out of a though spot. If you prefer semi-automatic self defense handguns, we'd recommend you look at the Sig Sauer P232. This handgun is light and unlike the previous revolvers, the SIG SAUER P232 is also slim which means it's very easy to conceal in your pocket. The SIG SAUER P232 has an additional advantage in the form of good sights, and the stainless model even has night sights.

The P232 Stainless comes with a Hogue grip that will work with wet and sweaty hands and the stainless frame will tolerate sweat and humidity with the Sig Sauer P232 you get 7+1 rounds of 380 ACP and with proper self defense ammo, this little can do significant damage. If you want to read a more in-depth review of the SIG SAUER P232, read this article and then see if the SIG SAUER P232 is the best summer gun for you. (Read the Sig Sauer P232 gun review.)

5: The Ruger LCP

The Ruger LCP is small and light. In fact, it is the smallest and lightest handgun in this list. The Ruger LCR offers 6+1 rounds of 380 ACP. If you choose good self defense ammo, and place your shots properly on the threat, the Ruger LCP ought to be able to get out of a tight spot. The Ruger LCP works well with a pocket DeSantis holster and the Ruger LCP will disappear in your pocket, and you'll forget it is there. We placed the Ruger LCR in the 5th sport because it takes skill and practice to use this little pocket gun properly.

You can install a laser which will make it better, but it still kicks like a small mule. If you want to read a more in-depth review of the Ruger LCP, read this article and then see if the Ruger LCP is the best summer gun for you.

In summary, any of these handguns can be easily carried in your pocket, even if you opt to wear shorts, during a hot summer day. These light and compact handguns will keep you safe and not offer extra weight, when the sun is out in full force and you want to shed layers of clothing, rather than add some. I hope this gives you some ideas and that you continue to carry even when it's hot outdoors.

Until next time, stay safe by staying alert
